I had not this issue when iMac had running Mac OS El Capitan or 10.13.5. I reinstalled El Capitan and I didn't have this issue and when I update it to High Sierra with HS Patcher, graphical issue again on Apple website. So I don't think to a GPU hardware issue but rather at a graphical kext issue. It's not very disturbing but I don't understand why this happened only on Apple site. Just to share my experience with running High Sierra on my Mac Pro 3,1 with the problematic Mac ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphic card.DO NOT USE. the Apple System Update mechanism to update the OS when Apple releases new 10.13.x updates unless you like the Red Screen of Death.

You need to do a complete install update from a USB drive - just download the latest High Sierra 10.13.x installer, go thru the USB boot patch process to create the install boot disk and proceed from there. Currently my Mac Pro is running 10.13.6 (it was running 10.13.4). Hope that helps with folks using the ATI HD 5770 card. Another data point here: early 2009 iMac, was on 13.4, did the App Store update to 13.6 before reading the latest on this thread and got the blank browser / preview window syndrome. After the cold sweats and shakes subsided (it's my wife's machine), prepared a 10.13.6 installer with HS Patcher, read recent posts on this thread while Patcher was doing its thing, and decided to try Onyx / maintenance scripts before reinstalling. Worked like a champ.

I'm mildly curious as to what exactly causes the blank window problem; in Preview you can see it draw the correct output before wiping over it with a grey blank. I suspect it's something in the kext cache. I'm not curious enough to try to repro it on Her computer, though! It worked great with the exception of the battery not charging. In fact, when I plug it in, it discharges the battery. I have checked and done the following: 1. Reset SMC 20+ times 2.

Changed charge adapters 3. Changed batteries 4.

Upgraded to High Sierra. Run Onyx repairs.

Monitored through coconut battery - all reports good. Reapplied the DosDude after install utilities, changes. Is there anything else I can do/try? Both of my Mac batteries are at 0%. I may need to take the Mac offsite one day. I will even downgrade the OS if that fixes the battery issue.

Many thanks to all, especially dosdude1, who have kept our 'obsolete' Macs going! Not only High Sierra, but now Mojave! Looks like my old mid-2009 Macbook5,2 workhorse has a few more years of updates coming. For myself, lately I've been taking a conservative approach to upgrades. I'm still on 10.11.6 El Capitan after two years of security-only updates, and probably no more to come if Apple's habits continue when Mojave is released. I've been waiting until all the 'bugs' have been addressed with High Sierra, both the pure-Apple and the associated 'unsupported' patches.

4.7

I figure soon I'll jump to a patched 10.13.6, and then start another two years of security-only until 10.15.6 'High Mojave' comes out. (I've already checked caveats like wifi, and I should be fine.) If Apple keeps to its schedule, Mojave will be released in October, and soon after that High Sierra will get its first of two years of security updates. So I'm wondering: When in the next three months (or so) should I make the jump to 10.3.6? I suppose it depends on whether there will be any more development on the High Sierra patcher. It looks like it's been stable since April, but I've noticed some posts regarding problems with patching 10.13.6.

I realize dosdude1 is busy with the Mojave patcher, but could he please let us know if he expects to release any more versions of the High Sierra patcher for 10.3.6? I can wait a few more months until I make the jump. Click to expand.I have been on 667 MHz 2x2GB for years (specifically Samsung 2GB 2Rx8 PC2-5300S-555-12-E3), and yes, I do have a Mid-2009.

The RAM sticks I just got are Crucial CT51264A667 – 4GB 200PIN DDR2 SODIMM 512Mx64 (apparently they don't make them anymore), I found that deal on eBay and figured that I wouldn't find anything close to that in 800MHz, as nice as it would be. It is a shame that you can get a set of 4x2GB for $15, but a 2x4GB set is often $60-150 depending on who you ask. And sure, I'll go test 8GB on El Capitan. I didn't go through the trouble of shrinking my partition for nothing.
